Filipino boxers so far 3-of-4 at AIBA World Boxing Championships
The Philippine contingent of boxers are so far 3-of-4 at the biennial AIBA World Boxing Championships, held this year in Almaty, Kazakhstan.
Roldan Boncales got the Philippines off to a winning start, Monday, besting Eddie Barillas of Guatemala on points, 30-27 30-27 29-28 in the men's flyweight (52kg) competition.
However, day two, Tuesday, was not as kind, as Dennis Galvan was dispatched by the 10th-ranked Gaybatulla Gadzhialiyev of Azerbaijan, 27-30 26-30 27-30 in the men's light welterweight (64kg) contest.
Olympian Mark Barriga however notched a win versus Vietnam's Ngoc Huynh on Wednesday, with a trio of 30-27 scores in their men's light flyweight (46-49kg) bout, while in the latest clash, bantamweight (56kg) Mario Fernandez put away Guyana's Imran Khan 30-27 30-26 30-27.
Boncales is back in action on Friday, against Chung Ri of North Korea, while Saturday sees Fernandez face fourth-seed Shiva Thapa and Barriga take on Yosbany Veitia Soto of Cuba. - AMD, GMA News
