The late Olympic silver medalist Anthony Villanueva paved the way for future generations of Filipino boxers to be recognized in the international scene, said Filipino ring icon Manny Pacquiao, Wednesday, as he relayed his sympathy and condolences to members of Villanueva's family.

"Villanueva paved the way for the next generations of Filipino boxers to be recognized in international arenas," state-run Philippines News Agency quoted Pacquiao as saying.

He added Villanueva's death was a great loss to the whole nation, and that the country lost a great athlete.

The reigning WBO welterweight titlist said Filipino boxers today owe Villanueva a lot since his contribution to boxing could not be measured by any award or recognition.

Pacquiao, who himself gained international fame by winning multiple titles in several weight divisions, also hailed Villanueva as the original Filipino boxing icon.

“My family will continue to pray for the eternal repose of the soul of Villanueva,” he said.

Earlier reports said Villanueva died at age 69 after suffering several heart attacks in recent years. He had been bedridden for more than two years.
