Boxing icon Manny Pacquiao added another feather to his cap after he was named the Communicator of the Year by Public Affairs Asia in its HP Gold Standard Awards in Hong Kong.
Pacquiao, just the second Filipino to receive the honor after President Benigno Aquino III, was recognized for his advocacy work as ambassador of the SAFE STEPS campaign, a pan-Asian initiative which aims to give the public messages on disaster preparedness.
In a press release, the Sarangani representative expressed his delight in receiving the award for his efforts in the campaign, which was developed in partnership between the Prudence Foundation and the National Geographic Channel.
"As a fighter, I learned that survival has three components: information, training, and resilience," he said. "Similarly, SAFE STEPS helps build resilient communities by raising awareness and providing vital information on disaster preparedness."
With the aim of recognizing the impact of public figures can have when they engage their stakeholders, the award is one of the most prestigious given by Public Affairs Asia according to Vice-President Mark O'Brien.
The award is open to any corporate leader, public servant, campaigner, or a political figure in the Asia Pacific nominated by individual, corporate, governmental group, or non-governmental organizations. — Marisse Panaligan/JST, GMA News
