Retired two-division world champion Gerry Peñalosa feels that Floyd Mayweather won't seriously entertain the thought of giving Manny Pacquiao a rematch.
Shortly after the fight, Mayweather sent a text message to Stephen A. Smith of ESPN saying he'll give Pacquiao a rematch after the Filipino recovers from his shoulder injury. A few days after, Mayweather changed his mind and slammed the door on fighting the Pacquiao icon once more.
Many fans were disappointed but it was not a surprising move by Mayweather, according to Peñalosa, a close friend of Pacquiao.
"I don't think Mayweather will ever give Manny a rematch," Peñalosa told GMA News Online.
"Knowing Mayweather, it won't be a wise move to give Manny another fight because he will have to stake his undefeated record again, he wants to retire with his '0.' Manny is very unpredictable during fights, he gives his all, you'll never know what's coming."
But if Peñalosa will have his way, he'd like to his see Pacquiao call it a day as he feels there's truly nothing left to prove anymore.
"As his friend, my concern is for his health. I don't want him to fight again unless it's Mayweather. If he's going to keep fighting only to face up and comers then it's not worth it. I don't want to see him used as a stepping stone — he's an icon and a national treasure. I'm not saying he'll be easily beat, but he's not getting any younger," told Peñalosa.
"The challenge is not there anymore. Besides his health, [he should] retire for his family. He has achieved it all, he's been at the top of the boxing world, pound-for-pound superstar and world record holder. God has given him everything."
So what comes after should Pacquiao chooses to hang them up?
"Manny is for the people, he really wants to serve the people. When Manny helps he does so whole heartedly. I see him being a full-time politician [after boxing]." — JST, GMA News
