Pinoy fighter loses split decision despite knocking down opponent four times


Filipino fighter Randy Petalcorin lost in controversial fashion in Australia last week, going down in a split decision against despite knocking down his opponent four times in their World Boxing Council (WBC) silver flyweight title bout.

Fighting Australia-based Tanzanian fighter Omari Kimweri in Melbourne, Petalcoring sent his foe to the canvas four times during the fight. However, neither the judges nor the referee credited that 24-year-old Davao City native for any of the knockdowns.

"This is horrible for boxing. This is killing the sport that we love and also hurts the boxers who work hard," Petalcorin's manager Jim Claude Manangquil said of the controversy.

The World Boxing Council has already vowed to investigate the result. —JST, GMA News
