Pinoy boxer Jerwin Ancajas wins IBF world title

SINGAPORE - Filipino southpaw Jerwin Ancajas of Davao del Norte is the newest Filipino boxing world champion following a unanimous decision victory over McJoe Arroyo to capture the IBF world super flyweight title Saturday night in Taguig City, Philippines.

 

Ancajas, 24, showcased why he has been one of the most promising prospects from the country for years by displaying his lauded boxing skills combined with power.

 

Ancajas utilized his jab, combination punches, movement and counter punching to outwork the former champ over twelve rounds. A barrage of punches dropped Arroyo in round 8, but the Puerto Rican was able to beat the count and continue the fight.

 

Arroyo went for another trip to the canvas in round 9 due to punishing body blows landed by Ancajas. The referee, however, ruled the knockdown a slip. Arroyo fought with much urgency in the final round, but it was all too late as the Filipino was awarded a unanimous decision nod after twelve rounds of action.

 

Ancajas is now the fifth world champion from the Philippines joining the ranks of Nonito Donaire, Donnie Nietes, Johnriel Casimero and Marlon Tapales. He improved his record to 25-1-1 with 16 knockouts while Arroyo tasted his first professional defeat as he fell to 17-1 with 8 knockouts. — DVM, GMA News
