Is Manny Pacquiao too old to fight? Chino Trinidad, Eduard Folayang weigh in on Mayweather's gibe

It's difficult to tell whether Floyd Mayweather Jr. is being genuinely concerned for eight-division champion Manny Pacquiao or he is just being salty over his old foe.

The former five-division champion recently said it is sad that the Filipino boxing icon still needs to fight at 42 years old, unlike him who fights because he just wants to.

For veteran broadcaster and sports journalist Chino Trinidad, Mayweather had the right of it.

"What legacy is a Manny Pacquiao chasing for? His place has long been cemented, we all know that," Trinidad told GMA News Online in a mix of English and Filipino.

"Exceptional as he is, he is no longer the Manny Pacquiao of old but he still fights because he needs it. He is a man of compassion but he is forced to fight out of necessity. Not because he wants to but because he has to like Floyd said," he added.

Trinidad, who extensively covered Pacquiao at the peak of his career, blamed the prizefighter's inner circle for letting him fight despite being past his prime.

"They always say that he could keep fighting because when Manny Pacquiao is out of the limelight they will die from hunger. That is why they cannot give the man an honest to goodness advice," he said.

Meanwhile, Eduard Folayang, the man touted as the face of Philippine mixed martial arts, believes that Mayweather's pronouncement should be taken with a grain of salt.

"It is hard to blame Pacquiao. Floyd can say that because he can make money out of exhibitions though he has a point that it is risky to fight a young champion given his age, "Folayang said. "Manny knows what he is doing and is proving a point that the sport of boxing is about fighting the best."

Though not as old as Pacquiao, the 36-year-old Folayang also took criticism in the past with fans saying that he should consider hanging it up. But unlike Mayweather, the Philippine MMA legend believes that fighting is more than just making money.

"Pacquiao is taking a risk here, unlike Floyd who fought a YouTuber, and yet he earned a lot of money. Manny still dares to be great, he is willing to put it all on the line so I think it is not necessarily just about the money," he said.

"Perhaps Mayweather said that to cover up for himself and make his exhibition with Logan Paul look legitimate," he added. "There are so many fighters out there that he can fight, why choose a YouTuber? We all know he did that for money."
