Nesthy Petecio represents LGBTQ community in Olympic silver medal win

Nesthy Petecio is dedicating her silver medal to the lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and queer (LGBTQ) community.

In a post-match conference, Petecio proudly opened up about being a member of the LGBTQ community.

"I am proud to be part of the LGBTQ community. Sulong, laban!" Petecio said, as reported by Philippine media delegates in Tokyo.

"Para rin po sa LGBTQ community ang laban na ‘to."

She spoke more about it in a press conference organized by the Philippine Sportswriters Association (PSA) and the Association of Boxing Alliances in the Philippines (ABAP).

"Sobrang proud ako na member ako ng LGBTQ [community], di ko po tinatanggi yun. Kahit ano gender natin, basta may pangarap tayo, laban tayo."

Petecio on Tuesday became the first Filipina boxer to win an Olympic medal.

Petecio settled for a second place finish after the judges gave a unanimous decision win to hometown bet Sena Irie in the women's featherweight finals.

The Philippines now officially has two medals from the Summer Games in Japan.
