Jonas Sultan scores four knockdowns, beats Carlos Caraballo by decision

One-time world title challenger Jonas Sultan scored four knockdowns en route to defeating Puerto Rico’s Carlos Caraballo by way of unanimous decision this Sunday morning (PHL time) at the Madison Square Garden in New York, USA.

Caraballo was patient in the opening round as he circled the ring throwing stiff jabs and hard left straight at Sultan, who opted to move forward, looking to land a big shot.

Sultan was on the attack in round two dropping his foe with a hard right uppercut to give him a taste of the canvas. Caraballo had beat the count then landed hard shots of his own, but Sultan took his shots with ease.

A big right hand dropped Caraballo for the second time in the fight in the opening minute of round three. Before the round ended, a hard exchange of leather saw Sultan's glove touch the mat that scored a knockdown for Caraballo.

Both fighters threw with bad intentions in round 5. Caraballo was calculated, landing clean shots at Sultan, who looked less aggressive than the opening rounds.

Sultan resumed his assault in round 6. Caraballo boxed throughout the round only to get caught down the pipe with a clean right straight that sent him crashing to the canvas for the third time.

Sultan was aggressive again the next round though Caraballo has fully recovered. Sultan had set up his punches but eventually got caught with clean shots the second he got reckless.

Caraballo found his second wind in round 8, assaulting Sultan with every weapon he has in his arsenal. Sultan was hurt, and a cut below his left eye opened up after taking combinations on top.

Sultan got caught with another hard left hook in the opening minute of round 9. Just as Caraballo looked like he was having his best moment, he got caught with a left hook that sent him to the canvas for a flash knockdown.

Sultan fought with urgency in the tenth and final round pouring everything he has left until the final bell.

All three judges scored the fight 94-93 for Sultan, improving his record to 18-5 with 11 knockouts, while Caraballo tasted his first defeat as he fell to 14-1 with 14 knockouts.
