WBC approves Canelo Alvarez's request to challenge for cruiserweight world title
The World Boxing Council has approved the request of Team Alvarez to fight the WBC world cruiserweight champion Ilunga Makabu.
In an announcement made by WBC on Wednesday, the sanctioning body said that the organization was approached by Saul Alvarez's manager Eddy Reynoso to propose the bout.
"The World Boxing Council Board of Governors has unanimously voted to approve Saul Canelo Alvarez to fight for the WBC cruiserweight title, in May or June," WBC wrote in a statement.
Alvarez, 31, became the first undisputed super middleweight in boxing history after he defeated Caleb Plant by technical knockout earlier this month.
The Mexican superstar now holds the WBC, WBA, WBO, and IBF world titles at 168 and is looking to become a five-division champion by defeating Makabu.
Meanwhile, WBC's number one contender in the super middleweight division David Benavidez has been approved to vie for an interim title.
