Carl Jammes Martin rises from the canvas to beat Baldonado, Charly Suarez wins via stoppage

Fast-rising Filipino prospect Carl Jammes Martin had to pick himself up from the canvas to score a stoppage over Ronnie Baldonado to defend his Philippine super bantamweight title and cop the vacant WBA Asia super bantamweight title this Saturday at the Elorde Sports Complex in Parañaque.

Martin, 22, got a bit careless in round two and caught a clean right hand from Baldonado that sent him crashing to the canvas. The young prospect recovered, came back strong then scored a technical knockout in round 11.

Martin, Probellum’s latest Filipino signing, improved his unbeaten record to 19-0 with 16 knockouts while Baldonado fell to 15-3-1 with 9 knockouts.

In the main event of the evening, 2016 Olympic boxer Charly Suarez scored a TKO over Tomjune Mangubat to capture the vacant WBA Asia super featherweight title.

Mangubat made a good account of himself in the early going but seemingly lost steam in the second half of the fight. Suarez tapped every weapon in his arsenal then landed an uppercut followed by a left hook that dropped his foe in the final round.

Mangubat beat the count only to be on the receiving end of Suarez’s barrage of punches. Unable to fire back, the referee stepped in to stop the fight at the 0:45 mark of round 12. The win improved Suarez’s record to 10-0 with 7 knockouts while Mangubat dropped to 15-3-1 with 12 knockouts.
