Longtime trainer would distance self from Ancajas if he chooses to fight at 115: 'He'd put his life at risk'

Jerwin Ancajas’ longtime trainer and manager Joven Jimenez does not want to see his fighter at the 115-pound division ever again.

The 30-year-old Ancajas lost his then IBF world super flyweight world title to Fernando Martinez by way of unanimous decision last month.

He has a rematch clause in his contract, but Jimenez says it would be best for the prizefighter to move up in weight.

“I have been telling two fights ago that it is time to move up in weight. The only reason why we stayed is because of the unification fight,” Jimenez told GMA News Online.

“He would put his life at risk if he fights at super flyweight again. I am not going to be a part of that so I would rather distance myself from Jerwin than be a part of him getting hurt at 115.”

Ancajas (33-2-2, 22KOs) insisted that unifying the titles remains his goal even after losing his belt. Jimenez’s pronouncement, however, gave him something deep to think about.

“For now I would think really hard about it because it worries my coach. I cannot decide yet, but my goal really is to unify the titles at 115. I will talk about it with coach Joven,” Ancajas said.

“Perhaps I will give 115 pounds one last try. I guess there is nothing to lose whatever happens to me. I will give it a try if that is the way of getting a unification.”
