Jerwin Ancajas to tap rematch clause with Fernando Martinez
Former IBF world super flyweight champion Jerwin Ancajas has decided to tap his rematch clause against Fernando Martinez.
Martinez, 14-0 with eight knockouts, battered the Filipino en route to a unanimous decision nod to snatch the IBF title last February. Shortly after the fight, Team Ancajas pronounced that it may be time to move up in weight but has ultimately decided to stay at 115 pounds.
"It is final. Jerwin pleaded to use his rematch clause and fight Martinez again. We had three conversations about it," said Ancajas' trainer and manager Joven Jimenez, who previously said that his fighter would be better off moving up.
According to Jimenez, the team has been training for four weeks now and would fly to the USA two weeks before the fight. The upcoming rematch is being targeted for July or August at a yet-to-be-determined venue.
