Jayson Vayson suffers controversial corner stoppage in world title bid

Filipino Jayson Vayson vs Oscar Collazo

Filipino contender Jayson Vayson absorbed a controversial defeat in his first world title challenge, losing via seventh-round corner stoppage against unbeaten WBO and WBA strawweight champion Oscar Collazo this past weekend at Fantasy Springs Casino in Indio, California.

Vayson, who moved down in weight to face the Puerto Rican star, was dropped by a flash knockdown in the opening round but was not hurt. He fought back in the following rounds, trading heavy leather with the Puerto Rican pressure fighter.

The action intensified in round 7 when the referee suddenly stepped in after Vayson’s corner waved the towel, stunning the Filipino, who appeared capable of continuing. The stoppage handed Vayson his second career defeat, falling to 14-2-1 with 8 knockouts while Collazo remained unbeaten at 13-0 with 10 knockouts.
