Weljon Mindoro extends unbeaten run, outpoints Mexican foe

Filipino prospect Weljon Mindoro remained undefeated after slashing through Mexico’s Elias Espadas on Saturday, June 6 (Philippine time) at the University of Texas in Arlington, United States.

Mindoro, known for his knockout power, showed a more measured side of his game en route to a unanimous decision victory in their 10-round super middleweight clash. The judges scored it 96-93, 98-91, and 97-92 in favor of the Filipino.

Espadas opted to stay mobile throughout, circling and boxing on the back foot as Mindoro pressed forward and stalked the action. In the fourth round, Mindoro’s thudding right hook landed clean, sending the Mexican fighter stumbling into the ropes.

The veteran showed resilience, surviving the count and later mounting a late surge. At one point, Espadas managed to rock Mindoro with a series of crushing shots that briefly turned the fight. However, the rally was not enough to overcome Mindoro’s early control.

The Dumingag, Zamboanga del Sur native improved to 17-0-1, though his 12-fight stoppage streak came to an end. Espadas dropped to 28-9-1, marking his third straight defeat.
