Hot-shooting Reyes, UP beat NU in UAAP hoops

QUEZON CITY, Philippines - The University of the Philippines is celebrating its Centennial Year. Its basketball team gave the school another reason to be ecstatic. Martin Reyes scored 21 points to lead the Maroons to an 86-72 victory over the National U Bulldogs in the UAAP men's basketball tournament Sunday at the Araneta Coliseum. It was the Maroons' first victory in nearly two years after losing all their 14 games last season. Behind new coach Aboy Castro, UP looked fresh and nowhere near the team that lost by an average of 22 points in 2007. Trailing by 28-17 after one, UP unleashed a 16-1 run to take over 33-29 in the second quarter. The Bulldogs went back up 34-33 after a Jewel Ponferada dunk. But the Maroons launched a 14-4 attack to finish the half ahead 48-38. UP never relinquished the lead since. Reyes, the Maroons' hot-shooting forward, was firing on all cylinders. He was four-of-eight from three-point range and was perfect from two-point area (three-of-three). Andrew Morfori and Jay Agbayani each had 11 for UP, the tournament's host school. Jonathan Jahnke finished with 17 points to lead NU. - GMANews.TV
