MANILA, Philippines - Angelo Que of the Philippines rallied with three birdies on the last four holes to card a six-over-par 76 in the first round of the Open Championship Thursday in England. Que was tied for 74th with 17 others on a day that saw brutal weather conditions dampen the campaigns of some of the world's best players. With strong winds and a little downpour attacking the Royal Birkdale, Que held his own and remained on track to make it to the third round. He was only a stroke down from the cut. Que’s 76 was even better than the scores turned in by former US Open champion Angel Cabrera (77), Geoff Ogilvy (77), Justin Leonard (77), former No. 1 Vijay Singh (80), and Ernie Els (80). Rocco Mediate of the US, Graeme McDowell of Northern Ireland, and Robert Allenby of Australia were tied for first place after each scored a one-under 69. “It was pretty good to birdie three of last four holes. I didn’t get enough breaks at the start and made four straight bogeys but all in all, I’m hitting it good," said Que, this season’s winner of the Philippine Open. Que was surprised that he did not feel any nerves standing over his opening tee shot, especially with the tough conditions. “I just told myself to play with the conditions that we had. There was no point in complaining," he said. – GMANews.TV
