RP shooter ousted, ends up dead last in men's trap
MANILA, Philippines â The stint of Eric Ang of the Philippines went from bad to worse to over as he closed his Olympic campaign finishing 35th in a field of 35 in menâs trap Sunday at the Beijing Trap Shooting Range. Ang shot dismal rounds of 21 and 20 to score 106, tying participants from Spain and Bolivia with the same tally. âSana sa susunod na Olympics, makabawi ako. Paghahandaan ko na yung susunod kung mag-qualify ako," said Ang, a picture of disappointment as he made his way to the interview room. The 37-year-old former practical shooter, who said jitters cost him better scores in the first day of qualifying Saturday, is the first Filipino to be ousted in the Olympics. On Saturday, Ang fired 19, 24 and 22 in the first three sessions of 25 birds each for 65 points to tie four others from 29th to 33rd places, a poor start that virtually knocked him out of the running for the six-man championship. âHilong-hilo pa rin pagkatapos ng event," Ang lamented. Using his 3-year-old Beretta DT 10 shotgun, Ang missed the fifth, ninth, 19th, 20th and 24 birds for that 20-total in the second string where only Fijiâs Glenn Kable fired a perfect 25 and only 12 managed a 24, including top qualifiers Russian Alexey Alipov (121) and Czechoslovakiaâs David Kostelecky (121). The four others who made it to the final round were Erminio Frasca (120) and Giovanni Fellielo (120) of Italy, Michael Diamond of Australia (119) and Josep Glasnovic of Croatia (119). He placed 30th after the first three rounds Saturday. â GMANews.TV
