Straight shooter: Ginebra's Cabatu named week's best
MANILA, Philippines â Jun-Jun Cabatuâs father was known for his low-post play during his PBA career. The son is now making a name as a perimeter threat. Cabatu was named on Monday the PBA Press Corps Player of the Week after he led injury-riddled Ginebra to a 101-92 victory over Air21 in the weekend. Cabatu, who is in his third team to start his third PBA season, scored a career-high 23 points, most of them coming from the three-point range, to live up to Ginebra coach Jong Uichicoâs expectations when Kings officials acquired him during the offseason. "We knew he would help out immediately because it is rare to find a big guy who can shoot the ball the way he does," Uichico said. Because of Cabatu's shooting (four-of-seven from three-point range), the Kings have opened the Philippine Cup with a 2-0 record. And that's without injured regulars Mark Caguioa, Billy Mamaril and Rafi Reavis. Cabatu, son of former Ginebra big man Sonny Cabatu, wasn't just shooting; he was filling the stat sheet with six rebounds, five assists and two steals. But Uichico stressed the importance of the six-foot-four slotman's long-range bombing. "He makes our offense look good because he can make the open shot," said Uichico of Cabatu. â GMANews.TV
