MANILA, Philippines – The Philippines opened up the 2008 qualifying round of the Asean Football Federation (AFF) Suzuki Cup with a 1-0 win over Timor Leste at the National Olympic Stadium in Phnom Penh, Cambodia. Ali Borromeo knocked in the lone goal in the match during the 68th minute to secure the win even as the result was a far cry from the Filipinos’ 7-0 drubbing two years ago in previous qualifiers held in Bacolod. “Timor Leste did not have some quality players then than they have now," RP coach Juan Cutillas said in the AFF website. “Timor played well but we deserved to win because we created a lot of chances." The Philippines takes on Brunei Darussalam Sunday and a win will move them closer to securing the two slots for the AFF Suzuki Cup main draw slated December in Jakarta and Bangkok. Host Cambodia and Laos are also vying for the two slots. – GMANews.TV
