PSC to only support winnable athletes in 2009 SEA Games
MANILA, Philippines â Philippine Sports Commission (PSC) chairman William âButch" Ramirez said they are set to support athletes who are capable of winning medals in the 2009 South East Asian Games in Laos. âWe are using money from the government and there should be a Return on Investment (ROI)," said Ramirez. Unlike in the past when the PSC bend on the request made by the Philippine Olympic Committee (POC) or a National Sports Association (NSA) for the inclusion of their athletes to the RP team, this time Ramirez will be firm in his decision of sending a lean but mean delegation to ensure the governmentâs fund in sports will be used properly. âWe will provide them (athletes) with funds for their equipment, training and actual preparation but we will stick to our budget which we will decide soon. If the POC would want to increase the number of athletes who are not potential medalists, then they will have to look for other funding," said Ramirez. Monitoring of athletes will be strictly implemented starting early next year to ensure those selected will be given the needed attention. Aside from the Laos SEA Games, the PSC will also be busy preparing the delegation to the first Asian Youth Games in Singapore. âWe want to have a productive team where we can spend less money but will come out with better results in international games. But if teams sent to compete on their own would win medals, the PSC is more than willing to refund their expenses," added the PSC head. â GMANews.TV
