MANILA, Philippines – Hapee Toothpaste earned a needed scoring boost after ensuring the services of top amateur cager Chris Tiu in time for the Philippine Basketball League (PBL) PG Flex Linoleum Cup. Tiu, arguably one of the most celebrated stars to come out of the Ateneo basketball program, will replace Fil-Am Gabe Norwood as Hapee’s crowd-pleaser. Hapee team manager Bernard Yang said Tiu, who averaged 14.4 points in his last year as an Eagle, has already agreed to suit up for the Lamoiyan franchise. Tiu’s presence in the Hapee line up could help the team end a five-year title drought. “He’s definitely joining our squad," said Yang, who is the longest serving team manager of the league. “He will be a big boost to the team considering his stature, dedication and leadership. He’s also a good role model not only as a player but also as a student. Despite his celebrity status, Chis remains as humble as ever," said Lamoiyan Corporation owner Cecilio Pedro. Though Tiu will join his team in the parade in Saturday’s opening ceremony, the 5-foot-11 guard won’t be playing for Hapee until next month. “We understand his situation, he still has to finish his commitments here and abroad, so we will just wait until he’s ready to play for us," said Yang. “Hopefully, by next month he can play for us." Yang said Tiu will attend some of Hapee’s practice so he can adjust easily with coach Gee Abanilla’s system and will also be at the sidelines during their games. “He’s a disciplined and smart player, so we believe he can easily jell with the team." The Lamoiyan franchise, now on its 15th year playing in the PBL, is determined to end a series of runner-up finishes, including three of the last four conferences. In eight finals appearances, Hapee Toothpaste won three titles including back-to-back crowns during the 2003-04 seasons when the team was still bannered by Ateneo players Rich Alvarez, LA Tenorio and Larry Fonacier. – GMANews.TV
