PBL: BK Stunners need OT to foil Bacchus’ bid for 2-0 start

MANILA, Philippines – The BK Stunners lived up to its moniker escaping with an 83-79 win over the Bacchus Energy Drink Warriors in Thursday’s second game in the Philippine Basketball League (PBL) 2008 PG Flex Linoleum Cup at the Arellano University Gym in Legarda, Manila. An Ogie Menor three-pointer and a Marcy Arellano lay-up, off a steal from a Val Acuña in bound pass, secured the win for coach Allan Gregorio’s Stunners, who squandered a comfortable 20-point bulge and needed an extra five minutes to finally silence the Warriors. BK, which has the core of reigning National Collegiate Athletic Association champion San Beda in its roster, enjoyed a 49-29 spread with 7:46 left in the third period but allowed Bacchus to cut the lead to 10 entering the final quarter. Slowly, the Warriors trimmed the Stunners’ lead as Bacchus’ defense held BK scoreless for more than five minutes. Bacchus continued its amazing comeback in the final five minutes of the fourth period with Paul Lee’s three-pointer forcing the five-minute extension. However, the Warriors failed to check Arellano and Borgie Hermida in overtime as the Stunners’ backcourt duo combined in scoring nine of BK’s 15 points in the extra period. Mac Baracael scored 16 of his team-high 18 points in the first half as BK enjoyed a 43-29 halftime spread. He struggled in the second half and was limited to two free throws in overtime. Menor added 16 markers, six rebounds, five assists and two steals but the high-flying San Beda forward committed a total of 13 turnovers. Arellano added 13 points, seven rebounds, five assists and three steals while Jake Pascual finished with 10 points, eight rebounds and blocked three shots. Paul Lee scattered 26 points behind a 5-of-7 shooting from downtown. He also had five rebounds, four assists, a steal and blocked one shot. Pari Llagas contributed 13 points and 10 rebounds while Mark Cagoco also scored 13 points and issued three assists. – GMANews.TV
