Top-ranked Tierro leads La Salle to twin wins in UAAP men’s tennis

MANILA, Philippines – Patrick John Tierro gave a glimpse of things to come in the University Athletic Association of the Philippines men’s tennis tournament after his systematic dismantling of an overmatched foe in the opening weekend at the Rizal Tennis Center. A long-time member of the RP Davis Cup team, Tierro, representing De La Salle, made minced meat of Francis Sunga of University of the East 6-0, 6-0, one of five easy matches won by the Green Archers over the Red Warriors on Saturday. On Sunday, Tierro teamed with Jandrick de Castro to beat Dennis Vitaliano and Niesson Tac-An 6-3, 6-0 in doubles competition and De La Salle routed University of the Philippines 4-1. In other La Salle-UE matches, it was Michael Basco over Novo Navarro 6-2, 6-0; de Castro and Irwin de Guzman over Michael Belen and Ivan Orilla 6-0, 6-3; David de Koenigswarter and Isaac Sabas over Rhoel Santiago and Prince Orilla 6-4, 6-1; and John Baldonado over Lyndon Mantua 6-2, 6-0. The games La Salle won against UP were: De Guzman over JR Dimayuga 7-6, 6-2 (8); Baco over Arithmetico Lim 7-5, 6-2; and Baldonado over James Pang 6-2, 6-2. UP’s only win was courtesy of Leandro Fernandez and Rogelio Reynoso who dumped Carlos Martin Espedido and De Koenigswarter 6-4, 6-2. In other matchups, defending champion University of Santo Tomas defeated Ateneo 4-1 on Sunday. On Saturday, University of the Philippines also beat Ateneo 3-2.
