'Friendlies' prepare RP girl booters for upcoming tourney


MANILA, Philippines – The national women's youth football team will be busy in the coming months in preparation for a tournament in Vietnam. The Under-16 team already played a pair of goodwill games with Guam last weekend held at the football fields at the Philippine Sports Commission (PSC) in Pasig and Ateneo in Katipunan The Guam team also played against the college squads of Far Eastern University and Ateneo. After this, the national youth team will prepare for another friendly match against Australia in April, which serves as a warm up for another tournament in Vietnam in June. The Under-16 team also competed in the Asian Football Confederation (AFC) championship qualifier in November last year where they won against against Singapore but lost to experienced teams from Australia and Myanmar. According to team manager Ted Punzalan, this is the first time the country formed a women's youth squad and the AFC championship qualifier was the first international exposure of the team. Philippine Football Federation (PFF) technical director Marlon Maro runs the national women's football program. He was the senior women's national football team coach until the 2007 Southeast Asian Games (SEAG). – GMANews.TV
