MANILA, Philippines - -San Sebastian College-Recoletos showed its dominance in the NCAA beach volleyball tournament at the La Salle Greenhills sand court, copping this season's womenâs and juniors titles. Laurence Ann Latigay and Margarita Pepito had a grand slam of sorts after coming out on top of the NCAA indoor volleyball and beach volleyball tournaments for the Lady Stags plus their recent conquest of the Shakeyâs V-League. Making this championship run a lot more significant for the two is that they did not lose a single match. Unlike in their first meeting the day before against runner-up College of Saint Benilde in the round robin eliminations which reached three sets, San Sebastian had an easier time putting off the Letran pair of Quemada and Giza Yumang in the winner take all match, 24-22, 21-15. SSC-R started slow in both sets but started humming in the final stages to take five-point leads on different occasions. In the second set, two consecutive failed receptions by CSB gave SSC an 18-13 advantage. Pepito then finished off the Lady Blazers with a service ace. Latigay and Pepitoâs juniors counterpart of Harold Nacino and Patrick John Rojas overcame Letran in straight sets, 21-16, 21-10, to capture the title. Rojas, who was named tournament most valuable player, scored on 13 attacks and four service aces. With the twinkill, SSC volleyball mentor Roger Gorayeb took the coach of the year awards in both womenâs and juniors divisions. In menâs seniors play, Eden Canlas and Erickson Ramos of Letran needed three sets to win the title at the expense of Philippine Christian University, 21-19, 18-21, 15-12. Canlas, who played his final game as a Knight, was adjudged MVP. Meanwhile, Ramos personally pocketed his third championship after winning two as a Squire in the juniors division. -GMANews.TV
