Rookie coach Pido Jarencio and his ward Jojo Duncil of the University of Sto. Tomas Growling Tigers continued to to shine on Saturday. Jarencio yet again mentored to victory the squad of the UAAP (University Athletic Association of the Philippines) against their counterparts from the NCAA (National College Athletic Association). The event: the UAAP-NCAA Bantay Bata 163 All-Star Game at the Philsports Arena in Pasig City Saturday afternoon. The UAAP team won 83-78 over the NCAA contingent. And while Jarencio was doing a splendid job at the bench, Duncil proved to be the biggest headache the NCAA squad had to deal with on the court. Duncil scored six straight points in the UAAP's 8-0 bomb in the last minutes of the game to complete the victory for UAAP that now edges NCAA, 3-2, in the event. For his heroics, Duncil was chosen as the games's Most Valuable Player. In the side events, University of the East swingman Elmer Espiritu edged 2004 Slam Dunk champ JC Intal, beating the Blue Eagles star's 47 point. Espiritu completed a twisting 360 degree slam that earned him 48 points. Intal's tomahawk and windmill shot were not enough to win the contest. San Sebastian College-Recoletos won the 2-ball compeition with the Jim Viray-Anthony Del Rosario duo posting an unsurmountable 60 point score. In the 3-point shootout, Chris Tiu of Ateneo posted nine points in the 30-second shootoff against Alex Angeles of San Beda College who merely managed a mediocre five markers. Tiu tied Angeles' 15 points in the shootout, which forced the shootoff. Meanwhile, banking on San Beda Red Cubs slotman David Marcelo's defense, the NCAA juniors squad defeated the UAAP team, 72-64, and took their first ever crown in the charity exhibition game. Apart from manning the shaded area, Marcelo contributed 12 points for the NCAA juniors team, while teammates Ryan Buenafe and Carlo Lithuania added 10 points each. - GMANews.Tv
