The University of Visayas (UV) Green Lancers banked on a solid defense to defeat UAAP semifinalist Adamson University, 70-67, axing the Falcons out of the 4th Collegiate Champions League Monday at the University of Santo Tomas Gym. Lancer Morsie Akad forced Falcon Patrick Cabahug into a jumpball in a play designed to give the Falcons the lead with 7.8 seconds to go. With the possession arrow pointing to the Green Lancers' bench, the Falcons' Marvin Polayapoy was forced to foul Von Lanete after the inbound. Lanete sank both freethrows. In the ensuing play, Kenneth Bono, the UAAP Most Valuable Player, failed in his attempt to force an overtime, missing from the three-point area, ensuring the Green Lancers a slot in the quarterfinals. UV is the current champion of the Cebu Schools Athletic Foundation Inc. (CESAFI). "The breaks of the game went our way in the end. Pero ang naging susi rin ng panalo namin ay ang magandang depensa ng mga bata at ang mga tira sa labas," said UV mentor Boy Cabahug. The loss denied new Falcons coach William "Bogs" Adornado, who like Cabahug was a former PBA star, a win in his first game on the Adamson bench. - GMANews.TV
