Purefoods has won so many battles behind James Yap and Kerby Raymundo. But last night, the Giants turned to their shock troopers for the needed muscle underneath the boards in reasserting their dominance over Talk âN Text, 108-102, Sunday in the KFC-PBA Philippine Cup at the Araneta Coliseum.

The Giants clobbered the Tropang Texters in the rebounding battle, grabbing 56 caroms to their rivalsâ 31, en route to the victory. Rico Maierhofer, the newest Giant addition, grabbed 10 boards to go along with 20 points and four blocks in a monstrous performance that typified his teamâs dominance over the Tropang Texters squad it has defeated for the fifth straight time since last season. âRico was unbelievable today," said Purefoods coach Ryan Gregorio, who also drew 13 markers each from James Yap and Kerby Raymundo. âBut it was also the coming-out-party of KG (Canaleta) while Jondan (Salvador) was our best performer tonight especially on defense," he added. It was the third win in five outings for the Giants while the defending champion Tropang Texters slipped to 2-2. Maierhofer was instrumental when Yap was on the bench due to foul trouble. The newcomer conspired with high-flying Canaleta and shock troopers Jondan Salvador and Romel Adducul to give Purefoods a big lift.
Canaleta, a former teammate of Yap and Paul Artadi in the University of the East, played his best game of the season. He had 16 points, including six in the fourth period. His 15-foot jumper gave the Giants their biggest lead of the game, 96-87, 5:54 left and later, Canaleta completed a breakaway dunk when the Tropang Texters were inching closer. Down the stretch, Yap took over, scoring his teamâs last five points to finally seal the win. The victory somehow erased the stigma of the Giantsâ 79-93 loss at the hands of erstwhile winless squad Coca-Cola Tigers last time around. âWeâre like a bunch of high school players when we celebrated after a made shot. We cut short our level of excitement today. We came out more serious and weâre back in business," said Gregorio. - GMANews.TV
