NCAA champion San Sebastian was pushed to the limit by unheralded University of San Carlos but came through with the big shots in overtime to score a 76-68 victory and advance into the Elite Eight of the 2009 Philippine Collegiate Champions League at the Ormoc City Superdome.

More than one month removed from their impressive sweep of San Beda in the NCAA finals, the Stags weathered off the spirited challenge of the upset-hungry Warriors behind Jimbo Aquino and Calvin Abueva. Aquino led the squad of Ato Agustin with 15 points with Calvin Abueva adding 13 markers. Point guard Pamboy Raymundo was also impressive with 11 points, eight rebounds and nine assists. San Sebastian will play Letran in Friday's Elite Eight action with the Stags perhaps looking to exact revenge on the Knights. For the record, the Knights were responsible for dealing the Stags' first loss after winning 15 straight games in the recent NCAA season. USC became the last Cebuano team to be eliminated from this annual tournament that decides the national collegiate champion, joining nine-time CESAFI titlist University of the Visayas and University of Cebu in the exits. Rude welcome for coach Meneses In the other game, University of Santo Tomas gave new Jose Rizal coach Vergel Meneses a rude welcome as the Growling Tigers defeated the Heavy Bombers, 64-62. Khazim Mirza, who took a break from his stint with the ASEAN Basketball League's Philippine Patriots, fired 23 points while UAAP MVP Dylan Ababou temporarily left his chores with RP Smart Gilas by adding 16 as UST arranged a showdown with Ateneo in the first round.
That match will also be a rematch of their UAAP Final Four clash two months ago that saw the Eagles demolishing the fourth-seeded Tigers on their way to the championship. John Lopez topscored for JRU with 16 points while veteran Marvin Hayes added 14 but failed to give Meneses a rousing debut after taking over the reins from Ariel Vanguardia about three weeks ago. The Mandaluyong-based squad played minus two key players in NCAA MVP John Wilson and big man James Sena. Wilson did not join the team after revealing his intention to forego his remaining years in the aftermath of Vanguardia's departure while Sena has yet to join a PBA team despite being drafted by San Miguel in the Rookie Draft last August. - GMANews.TV
