Tigers begin hunt for 3rd straight UAAP men’s volleyball plum


University of Santo Tomas begins its campaign for a three-peat as the Tigers battle De La Salle in Sunday’s opening of the UAAP Season 72 volleyball tournament at The Arena in San Juan City.

The Tigers, who completed a sweep of the 15-game eliminations and the best-of-three finals against University of the Philippines en route to their second straight crown last year, take the floor at 11 a.m. UST will again be bannered by last year’s MVP and Best Setter Rey Carl Dimaculangan together with veterans Jayson Ramos and Henry Pecana, who were adjudged Best Attacker and Best Digger, respectively, in 2008. Preceding the UST-DLSU tussle is the matchup between the UP Fighting Maroons and the Ateneo Blue Eagles at 9 a.m. Action in the women’s division also starts Sunday with University of the East tackling National University at 2 p.m. and Ateneo de Manila meeting UP at 4 p.m. The Lady Eagles, fourth placer in the recent Shakey’s V-League Season 6 second conference, are favored against the Lady Maroons who failed to register a single victory in same league. Veterans Kara Acevedo, Fille Cainglet, Bea Pascual, Gretchen Ho and Angeline Gervacio are expected to spearhead the Lady Eagles’ campaign this year. - GMANews.TV
