Undoy, Dela Peña rule Alabang race
A pair of seasoned veterans foiled the plans of several former marathon champions when Esmeraldo Undoy and Genevieve Dela Peña ruled Sundayâs Sunkist Healthy Heart Masters and Executive Run held at the University Avenue inside the Ayala Alabang Village in Muntinlupa City. Undoy, a 41-year-old Philippine Army runner, and the 37-year-old Dela Peña broke away from the pack early in the race and never looked back. Former marathon champions Hernandito Pineda, Edgardo Pedregosa, Rey Antoque and Jona Gayumba-Atienza also competed in the said race. The former champions tried to challenge Undoy and Dela Peña but the eventual champions wonât be denied of the win. Both Undoy and Dela Peña each pocketed P5,000. "I know I have tougher opponents so I expected that this will be a hard race. But Iâm in good condition since I prepared hard for this event," said Undoy who posted a time of the 37 minutes and two seconds. He broke off from challengers after the three-kilometer mark to enjoy a 1:05 advantage against the 55-year-old Pineda (38:07). Romeo Marquez settled for third with 39:41 while Rodolfo Tacadino (40:21) and Pedregosa (41:30) finished at fourth and fifth place. Dela Peña also had an easy race as she led from the start. She submitted a time of 52:51 which was 3:19 minutes ahead of Gayumba-Atienza (56:10). Third place went to Christia Caoile at 1:18:47. The top five finishers in the Masters class received P5,000, P3,000, P2,000, P1,000 and P1,000. Pilipinas Shell executive Peter Willaim Kennedy (42:40) and Kathryn Carag (57:36) topped the Executive 10K race to claim the P3,000 cash prize. Other winners in the said race were Jaipee Boral and Hazel Gavino (5-K Masters), Nico Carrasco and Josephine Parco (5K) and Jose Garcia (10K). â GMANews.TV
