Alcantara, British partner's luck at Roehampton ends
Filipino Francis Casey Alcantara and British partner Oliver Goldingâs luck ended in the AEGON Junior International-Roehampton 2010. The unseeded pair suffered a 6-1, 7-5 defeat at the hands of the No. 3 team up of Colombiaâs Juan Sebastian Gomez and Japanâs Yasutaka Uchiyama in the boysâ doubles semifinal played at The Bank of England Sports Centre. Despite the loss, Alcantara and Golding made a name for themselves after scoring consecutive upset wins against seeded rivals. The 60th ranked Alcantara and the 40th ranked Golding eliminated scored a 4-6, 6-3, [10-5] victory over eighth seeds Filip Horansky and Jozef Kovalik of Slovakia in the Round of 16 then followed it up with another hard-earned 6-3, 4-6, [10-4] decision against the No. 2 pair of Bosnia and Herzegovinaâs Damir Dzumhur and Croatiaâs Mate Pavic in the quarterfinals. The 18-year-old Alcantaraâs semis stint at Roehampton is his second since he started competing in Europe. He also made it to the Final Four round of the 51st Trofeo Bonfiglio in Italy with Irelandâs John Morrissey as his partner. Gomez and Uchiyama, currently in 15th and 21st place in the International Tennis Federation (ITF) junior rankings, went on to win the boysâ doubles crown after a 4-6 6-2 [10-7] win over No. 6 seeds Micke Kontinen of Finland and Czech Republicâs Jiri Vesely. Kontinen and Vesely earned a finals spot after a 7-6 (4), 6-4 win over unseeded Ben Mclachlan of New Zealand and Irelandâs Sam Barry. The AEGON Junior International, a Grade I ITF event, is Alcantaraâs last tournament as a junior player.
