Jeson Patrombon’s campaign in boys’ singles at the Wimbledon Juniors Open came to an abrupt end after the Philippines’ top junior netter suffered a straight-set 6-1, 7-5 loss to Mitchell Frank of the USA. Patrombon was out of his element early in the match. And despite playing much better in the second, the 19th ranked Frank won’t be denied of the win. This was Patrombon’s worst showing in his second Grand Slam event after the 17-year-old netter reached the Round of 32 in the French Open last month. Ranked 37th in the world with 455 points, Patrombon hopes to atone for his sorry singles performance as he is set to compete in the doubles division with the 71st ranked Ahmed Triki of Tunisia as his partner. The unseeded pair of Patombon and Triki – a 6-3, 7-5 winner against Alexander Rumyantsev of Russia in the boys’ singles – will have the No. 2 seeds Bosnia and Herzegovina’s Damir Dzumhur and Croatia’s Mate Pavic as their first round opponents. This is Patrombon and Triki’s second time of playing together after the French Open where they suffered an early exit against Frenchmen Romain Arneodo and Mathias Bourgue. Francis Casey Alcantara is also seeing action in this Grade A event as he opens his singles campaign against French qualifier Gregoire Barrere. In the doubles, Alcantara will be paired anew with Briton Oliver Golding as they face former partner Filipino-American Raymond Sarmiento and Denis Kudla of the US in the first round. Alcantara and Sarmiento had played together twice this year where their partnership earned from them the 21st Mitsubishi Lancer International Tennis Championships doubles crown in Manila. Alcantara and Golding are teaming up for the second straight tournament hoping to match, if not surpass, their semifinals showing in the AEGON Juniors International last week. – JVP, GMANews.TV
