Men's volley champs Tigers vent ire on Maroons

Denied of a first-round sweep, defending men’s champion University of Santo Tomas vented its ire on University of the Philippines, 25-21, 25-19, 28-26, at the start of the second round of the 73rd UAAP volleyball tournament at The Arena in San Juan City. John Paul Torres led three other Tigers who finished in twin digits as the España-based squad bounced back from a heartbreaking five-set loss against Season 72 runner-up Far Eastern U at the end of the first round. Torres had 19 points while James Pecana, Jayson Ramos and Harby Ilano added 13, 12 and 11 markers respectively for the Tigers, who improved to a 7-1 slate while dealing the Fighting Maroons their fourth loss in eight matches. The FEU Tamaraws occupy the top spot after a seven-game sweep in the first round. Despite UP's loss, the Maroons remained in solo fourth place behind La Salle’s 5-2 mark. In another match, Adamson University improved to a 3-5 card after posting a 25-16, 25-20, 20-25, 27-25 win over National University. Ron Jay Galang and Nito Jeruz scored 23 and 21 points respectively for the Falcons. The Bulldogs suffered their seventh loss against one win to remain at the cellar. – JVP, KY, GMANews.TV
