Accel backs summer sports events

Summer is a busy season for sports and Accel, the official outfitter of the Philippine Basketball Association, has thrown its full support in several sports activities. Basketball, badminton, swimming, marathon and tennis are just some of the sports the brand will engage in to influence the youth to sweat it out. Among the events backed by Accel include the recently-conclude ITF Mitsubishi Jr. Tennis Championships, the NBTC Inter-School Tournament (beginning March 31), the Shakey's V-League event (April 3-May 22), Elite Basketball Camp (May 3-8), Team Accel Running, Globe Run For Home 2011 at BGC, PBA D-League, Davis Cup Tennis Tournament, National Collegiate Billiards League and the RUNNEX Running Clinics held every Sunday (beginning April). Sporteum Philippines Inc. president Willie Ortiz said Accel’s summer program would focus on encouraging people from all walks of life, especially the younger generation, to get into sports to promote health and self-confidence, among others. "When you're active and busy, you will not be tempted to do something unwholesome like doing drugs,'' said Ortiz. Accel’s summer campaign will also zero in on kids to embrace an energetic schedule instead of adopting a sedentary lifestyle. “Most young people would rather sit in front of a computer or laptop than engage themselves into physical activities,'' said Ortiz. - RCJ, GMA News
