University of Santo Tomas scored a 66-60 upset win over two-time defending champion Adamson University in the UAAP women's basketball tournament on Wednesday at the Blue Eagle Gym. Juvelyn Andaya scored 15 points and MaryJoy Galicia tallied 14 markers and 15 rebounds for the Tigresses, who are now coached by former Growling Tiger Chris Cantonjos. Angel Ortega and Snow Penaranda made 14 and 13 points each in a losing cause for the Lady Falcons. Penaranda also grabbed a game-high 19 rebounds. Adamson sorely missed the services of two-time MVP Amby Almazan, who already completed his playing years. Ateneo de Manila University and University of the Philippines also opened their respective campaigns with contrasting victories. The Lady Eagles rallied from a 16-point deficit to foil the National University Lady Bulldogs, 51-39, while the Lady Maroons sent the University of the East Lady Warriors reeling to a 64-52 rout. Samantha Ong was the lone double-digit scorer with 11 points for the Lady Eagles, who scored the win behind a balanced offense. Danica Jose only made nine points but pulled down 12 reobunds. Eden Alla led the Lady Bulldogs with 13 points, four rebounds and one assist, while Kristina Tolentino and Roselyn Santos each had eight markers. Gemma Miranda hauled down 10 rebounds for NU, which stormed to a 21-8 halftime lead. Kryzz Casino scattered 12 points and grabbed 10 rebounds in UP's victory over UE. UP's win spoiled UE's Dianne Ventura's 23-point output and Cindy Resultay's 17-rebound performance. - JVP, GMA News
