Gabriel bags silver for PHL team's 1st medal in world poomsae tilt

Marvin Gabriel settled for the silver to give the Philippines its first medal in the ongoing 6th World Taekwondo Federation (WTF) Poomsae Championships on Friday night at the Olympiets Sports Complex in Vladivostok, Russia. Gabriel won the silver in the men's individual division after losing to Korea's Yu-Seok Kim in the finals. Turkey's Habip Okeu and Iran's Mohammed Aderi shared the bronze. Korea actually won four gold medals on opening day while Great Britain, Germany and Chinese-Taipei bagged one each. Chinese-Taipei, host Russia and Denmark also clinched a silver in the annual event that attracted 570 athletes from 53 countries. Other Philippine team members are Siblings Gabriel and Jean Gierre Sabido with new teammate Galilee Taniya as the trio hopes to defend their men's team event title while 2010 Philippine Sportswriters Association (PSA) Athletes of the Year Camille Alarilla, Janice Lagman and Rani Ann Ortega are aiming to regain the women's gold they won in 2009. The Philippines also won a bronze in a freestyle poomsae friendship exhibition contest held during the opening ceremony. Vietnam won the gold while Turkey settled for the silver. - JVP, GMA News
