Ateneo clinches third place in V-League Open Conference

Alyssa Valdez scored four of Ateneo's last six points including the game-winning kill as the Lady Eagles scored a thrilling 14-25, 25-20, 25-18, 19-25, 15-10 win over Philippine Navy in Thursday's battle for third at The Arena in San Juan City. Ateneo swept the best-of-three series for its third second runner-up finish in the league after winning Season 8's first conference crown at Adamson's expense. Navy's Cecille Cruzada tied the game for the last time at 9-9. Ateneo's Mic-Mic Laborte quickly answered with a hit to break the deadlock then Valdez came up with three crisp kills to give the Lady Eagles a 13-9 lead. Navy skipper Johanna Carpio scored the Lady Sailors' last point. Valdez then scored twice after that including the game-winning point, a hit down the line. Valdez paced the Parley Tupaz-coached Lady Eagles with 18 hits, three blocks and two service aces while Fille Cainglet added 16 hits and an ace. Aiza Maizo led the Lady Sailors with 17 hits and 3 blocks followed by Laborte's 13 hits, two blocks and an ace. — JVP, GMA News
