Vietnam beats PHL Army to win V-League Club Invitational title

Vietnam came back from two sets down to subdue Philippine Army, 18-25, 14-25, 25-22, 25-23, 15-8, to capture the inaugural Shakey's V-League Club Invitational title. The Lady Troopers could have closed out the match in the third frame when they came back from a 23-15 deficit and move within two, 24-22. But Russian Anactaxia Trernai sealed Vietnam's third-set win with a down-the-line hit. Mary Jean Balse teamed up with Joanne Bunag and Tina Salak as Army seemed headed to finally win the match when the Lady Troopers enjoyed a 23-19 edge. But Trernai unleashed four straight solid hits and added an ace to move Vietnam to match point. Bunag committed an error when her hit sailed wide paving the way for a deciding fifth set. Trenai then joined hands with fellow Russian Ekaterina Martynova to secure the title for the visiting squad. Terrnan, who was named the Best Spiker of the tournament, paced Vietnam with 24 points while Martynova, the tournament MVP and Best Scorer, added 17 markers. Bunag led the Lady Troopers with 17 points while Rachel Ann Daquis scored 15. Malaysia defeated Ateneo in the battle for third, 25-22, 25-21, 25-13 victory. Other individual awardees are Wong Fei Tien of Malaysia (Best Blocker), Army's Mary Jean Balse (Best Server), Ateneo's Denise Lazaro and Jem Ferrer as Best Digger and Best Setter, and Vietnam's Tuyen Bui Vu Thanh as Best Receiver. — JVP, GMA News
