PBA D-League: Boracay Rum keeps sister team Cobra winless

Even sister teams show no mercy toward each other in the PBA D-League. The Boracay Rum Waves slapped the Cobra Energy Drink Ironmen their third loss, 70-56, on Tuesday at the Jose Rizal University Gym. Both under the Tanduay Group, the holdovers from Cobra went to Boracay Rum. The Ironmen are now composed mostly of players from University of the East. The Waves now have a 2-2 win-loss record, while the Ironmen are to the bottom of the standings with 0-3. Despite playing without head coach Lawrence Chongson who was on a business trip in the U.S., Boracay Rum showed superiority both on offense and defense. “Sa mga nakaraang game kasi namin, ang tagal nila (players) mag-init. Kaya kahit lumamang kami sa second, third and fourth quarters, di pa rin enough to offset yung kulang sa first quarter," said Boracay Rum assistant coach Potit De Vera. Having learned their lesson, the Boracay Rum made adjustments in their plays which proved successful as they took control of the first quarter, ending it at 23-9. Former Mapua captain Erwin Cornejo had his breakout game as he scored eight straight points for Boracay Rum in the second quarter. Rusty from an 18-day hiatus, Cobra was held scoreless for five minutes in the second frame until JM Noble finally hit a basket with 3:30 left on the clock. Noble started an 8-0 romp to cut the deficit to 13, 35-22. In the third quarter, Josan Nimes and Adrian Santos teamed up to bring back Cobra into the game. They were down by only eight, 48-40, with two minutes remaining. However, the Waves quickly scored nine points to end the quarter at 57-40. Cornejo once again proved to be the spark as he made back-to-back layups as soon as he stepped on the floor in the final quarter. His teammate Mac Sabelina, a junior from STI College, scored another layup to give them their biggest spread of 21, 65-44. The Ironmen would no longer be able to recover after that. Cornejo led Boracay Rum to their second win with 16 points, two assists, one rebound and one steal. - OMG, GMA News
