Last year's losing finalist Far Eastern University subdued De La Salle University, 25-16, 17-25, 25-23, 25-16, at the start of the 74th UAAP men's volleyball tournament Saturday at The Arena in San Juan City. Tamaraws skipper Rodolfo Labrador Jr. led his team to the opening-day win with 16 points, four blocks and a service ace. Teammates Arvin Avila and John Dimapaylo added 11 and 10 points each for the George Pascua-coached Tams, who lost to the University of Santo Tomas Tigers in last season’s best-of-three finals. Red Christensen paced the rookie-laden Green Archers with 11 hits and three blocks. Reuben Inaudito scored a game-high 20 points while Peter Den Mar Torres chipped in 16 markers as National University outlasted Adamson, 25-20, 20-25, 25-20, 18-25, 15-8, in the other men’s match. Ron Jay Galang, John Hendrix Competente and Armando Maleon Jr. tallied 14 points apiece for the Falcons in the 105-minute long match. — JVP, GMA News
