Defending men’s champion University of Santo Tomas swept past La Salle, 26-24, 25-12, 25-17, on Saturday for its second win in the 74th UAAP volleyball tournament at The Arena in San Juan City. The Green Archers were very much in the game only in the first set then failed to keep up with the Growling Tigers once the 18-time titlists got their rhythm Juan Salvador Depante III had 11 hits and three blocks to lead UST while teammates Mark Gil Alfafara and Jayson Ramos scored 13 and 10 points each. No La Salle player scored in double figures with Red Christensen and Christopher Antonio posting seven points apiece. National University, in the other men’s match, remained on top after a 25-21, 25-20, 25-16 win over Ateneo. Danilo Ramos and Reuben Inaudito combined for 26 points to lead the Bulldogs to a 3-0 start, the Sampaloc-based squad’s best start ever in the league. — JVP, GMA News
