University of Perpetual Help System DALTA opened 2012 by drubbing listless Jose Rizal University, 3-0, in Tuesday's opening of the 87th NCAA lawn tennis tournament at the Rizal Memorial Tennis Center.
The Altas' number two player Elson Solon started their rampage with an emphatic 6-3, 6-0 victory over Heavy Bomber Raymond Angeles before their number one player Russell Arcilla teamed up with Kim Polero to smash JRU's Melvin Ajoc and Allaine Pila, 6-0, 6-1, in the doubles event.
Jeremiah Macias capped Perpetual's impressive win with a 7-5, 6-4 triumph over Rhesty Boy Mano.
With the sweep, the Altas set in motion their hopes of winning their first tennis title since snaring back-to-back championships in the 90s.
"It's a good start for us, we hope to sustain the form and continue our winning ways," said Perpetual coach Belen Dante.
Joining Perpetual at the helm was defending champion College of St. Benilde, which pummeled Emilio Aguinaldo College, 3-0, on wins by Larry Antigua over Carl Natividad, 6-1, 6-0; Rolee Joven and Romeo Dimakiling over Natividad and Stephen Pilaro, 6-0, 6-0; and Marco Suntay over Nathaniel Pineda.
San Beda College likewise won over Arellano University, while San Sebasitan College-Recoletos dumped Mapua Institute of Technology. — AMD/JVP, GMA News
