Underdog Boxing: Karlo Maquinto still in critical condition

Karlo Maquinto lost consciousness moments after fighting last Saturday night. I visited Maquinto Monday night and he was still in critical condition. His family decided to transfer him to a private room so they can be by his side. Maquinto had a steady heart rate and his blood pressure was 120/80. Maquinto's family, manager, trainers, and fellow Shape Up Gym fighters were all by his side waiting for new developments. Coming into the fight, Maquinto received a clean bill of health. He passed all of the tests he underwent earlier this month and he was declared fighting fit. The doctor who read the results of his CT scan agreed that all of the damage appeared to be recent, meaning he got all those blood clots in his last fight. According to his trainers, Maquinto was alert throughout the fight. Every time he'd get hit, he'd look at his corner and nod to signify that he was okay. Maquinto collapsed after the decision was read and he was immediately brought to the hospital. He was still conscious and responsive inside the ambulance but he slowly slipped into a comatose state soon after. It's always difficult for people to accept that these things happen in boxing so the knee jerk reaction of most people is to put the blame on someone. But in this case, I think all the precautionary measures were taken to protect Maquinto. Similar to the case of Z Gorres, Maquinto's health turned sour through the course of the fight. Both cases are unlike what happened to the late Lito Sisnorio who fought a few days after being knocked out. The hard part is that it is almost impossible to predict when something like this will happen. Maquinto is a very young fighter and has not received a lot of blows in his young career. It was also not a mismatch as his opponent has a worse record. It's really difficult to comprehend what transpired because things like this are not supposed to happen to very young fighters this early in their careers. His manager and his trainers got in touch with Maquinto's sister immediately and she was able to be by her brother's side an hour after he was brought to the hospital. His mother and brother were flown in to Manila the next day. Maquinto's loved ones are still hoping for a miracle. The kid is fighting hard but he needs all the help he can get. Please say a prayer for his recovery.
