The Far Eastern University Tamaraws and the Our Lady of Fatima University Phoenix made their presence felt, scoring big wins over their opponents in the 8th Fr. Martin Collegiate Open Cup, last Sunday at the Arellano University gym.
The Tamaraws, runners-up in the UAAP men's basketball tournament, dismantled an undermanned San Sebastian College-Recoletos Stags squad 70-59, to clinch a spot in the quarterfinals. Both teams were missing key parts. FEU played without RR Garcia, while San Sebastian did not have their head coach Topex Robinson at the helm. Despite Garcia's absence, the Tams had more than enough firepower, getting 20 markers from Terrence Romeo, and 11 from big man Russell Escoto. With the win, FEU moved up to 4-2, while the Stags dropped to 2-4, as they did not have enough weapons to recover from an 18-point third quarter deficit that pegged the score at 54-36. In the other men's Group B game, the Our Lady of Fatima University Phoenix blasted the De La Salle-Lipa Chevrons, 83-44, to move above the .500 mark to 4-3. Coached by former pro player Rensy Bajar, the Phoenix produced a 23-6 first quarter explosion that sent the Chevrons reeling. In six outings, the outmatched Chevrons have not won a single game. FEU and Our Lady of Fatima now join the 6-0 Colegio de San Juan de Letran Knights and the 5-1 University of the East Red Warriors as the cream of Group B. In the women's division, the Lyceum Lady Pirates subdued the De La Salle-Lipa Lady Chevrons 80-32, clinching the second automatic semifinals berth with a 4-1 win-loss slate. - AMD, GMA News More Videos
