Adamson University ended Ateneo's six-game winning run in the 74th UAAP baseball tournament, scoring a 14-11 come-from-behind triumph that foiled the Blue Eagles' bid of winning their first crown via a sweep Thursday at the Rizal Memorial Baseball Stadium. The Falcons, instead of being intimidated by a streaking Blue Eagles team, showed that they had other plans in mind to clinch their fourth win in seven games. The Blue Eagles looked headed to extending their streak when Matt Laurel belted a three-run homerun for an 11-5 Ateneo lead after six innings.
But Adamson catcher Nelson Salazar answered with a two-run homer in the seventh to chip away Ateneo's lead. Errors by Ateneo starting pitcher Adrianne Bernardo also did not do the Blue Eagles' cause any good. A Warren Vispo two-run single pushed the Falcons on top, 12-11, a lead that they protected until the final inning.
Vispo had four RBIs (runs batted in) and four runs, while Salazar had three RBIs of his own for the Falcons. Laurel had three RBIs for the Blue Eagles.
La Salle, in the other game, pushed defending champion University of Santo Tomas further down after posting a 7-5 triumph—the win being the fifth in seven games for the Green Archers while the loss was the fifth in seven outings for the Tigers.
Women's volleyball UST and Adamson downed their respective foes to make the race for the last two semifinals berths even tighter. Maika Ortiz registered a personal and season best 20 hits while Maru Banaticla scattered 15 points for the Tigresses, who eliminated the University of the East (UE) Lady Warriors out of the Final Four race with a 25-21, 25-15, 25-16 triumph.
Pau Soriano, on the other hand, made 20 points in the Lady Falcons' 25-18, 25-18, 21-25, 25-19 victory over the Far Eastern University Lady Tamaraws.
FEU's loss forged a three-way tie for third place as the Lady Tams, the Tigresses and the Lady Falcons all hold 7-5 records. La Salle (11-0) and Ateneo (11-2) are already assured of semifinals berths. — JVP, GMA News
