UST, La Salle in dead heat for 74th UAAP overall crown

The race for the UAAP Season 74 General Championship continues to heat up as University of Santo Tomas holds a slim 15-point lead over De La Salle University.
 
With 12 more events to be played in the second half of the season, La Salle and Far Eastern U, which compiled 155 points and 133 points, respectively, remain as the strongest contenders to unseat reigning overall champion, UST, which currently has the most points at 170.
 
A tall order
 
The Taft and Morayta-based teams face a tough task of unseating the Growling Tigers, who look confident in claiming their 14th straight Senior's General Championship. The España-based squad has the most number of general championships in the Senior's division with 38 and has won 13 in the Junior's side.  
Strong Start
 
UST's Season 74 campaign is anchored on its strong start. It grabbed five championships and two second-place finishes in the first half en route to claiming pole position with 151 points at the end of the semester. La Salle finished the first semester with 139 points behind one championship and four second-place finishes Volleyball, tennis, fencing, chess, baseball, softball, athletics and football are the remaining events in the second half. UST, La Salle and FEU, based on last season's results, still remain as the more serious contenders for the upcoming events.
In Season 73, UST claimed the men's volleyball title while La Salle clinched the crown in the women's side. UST and La Salle also topped the men's and women's tennis tournament, respectively. FEU and La Salle bagged first-place finishes in chess, while UST and Adamson took home the baseball and softball crowns. In athletics, FEU emerged as champions in both men's and women's categories, while UP and FEU were crowned champions in men's and women's football. — JVP, GMA News
