UAAP Chess: FEU men, DLSU women maintain championship streaks
The Far Eastern University Tamaraws ran their winning streak up to six straight years in men's chess, while the De La Salle University Lady Archers pulled off a three-peat in the women's division, as the 74th UAAP chess tournament concluded Sunday, at the FEU Mini-Theater. Despite falling to the University of the Philippines Fighting Maroons 1-3 during the tourney's 14th and final round, the Tams still finished on top, after the second-ranked University of Santo Tomas Growling Tigers managed just a 2.5-1.5 triumph over DLSU. Chess MVP Ritchelieu Salcedo and Antonio Chavez kept the title in Morayta when they forced Leo Daylo and Ywhen Lababo of UP to draws. FEU seemed to be reeling after two-time MVP Sheider Nebato fell to MC Nazario, and fellow Tam Lennon Hart Salgados dropped to Willbert Pilarta. But overall, FEU amassed a grand total of 38.5 points to come out on top, 2.5 points better than the score of the Growling Tigers, good enough to earn them their 13th men's title. UP placed third with 34.5 markers. “I’m very happy that we retained the championship this season. [I] hope we continue to perform well despite the tough competition,” said Tamaraws coach Grandmaster Jayson Gonzales. The Lady Archers on the other hand, clinched the title by defeating their rivals in the Ateneo de Manila University, 3.5-5. Womens division MVP Jan Jodilyn Fronda helped her squad amass 42 points, while UP placed second after a 4-0 drubbing of National University, good for 31.5 points total. Ateneo settled for third with 30 points total. - AMD, GMA News
