Letran relied on Kevin Alas' end-game heroics as the Knights sneaked past the Philippine Merchant Marine School Mariners, 63-60, in the 2012 Fr. Martin Summer Cup basketball tournament at the Trinity University of Asia gymnasium in Quezon City. Alas scored four straight points in the final minute of the match to push Letran for the early Group B lead together with the University of Perpetual Help Altas, La Salle Green Archers and the Informatics Icons. Alas and Letran big man Jam Cortes finished with 14 points each. Eric Acuña scored 10 of his 18 points in the third quarter as the Informatics Icons notched their first win over the weekend with an 80-62 drubbing of Ateneo-B. Reigning UAAP champion Ateneo, on Sunday, scored a 77-71 win over Jose Rizal University. Kiefer Ravena tallied 18 points while Tonino Gonzaga and Nico Salva made 15 markers each for the Blue Eagles, who posted their second straight win in Group A. In juniors play, the Far Eastern University-FERN Baby Tamaraws dumped Jesus Is Lord Christian Colleges Foundation, 99-79, for their second straight win. The Baby Tamaraws now share the Group A top spot with NCAA junior's champion San Beda Red Cubs. La Salle-Zobel, the JRU Light Bombers and San Beda-B also defeated separate foes.
